JASON AND THE DRAGON is a fantasy tale and tells of a quest to find the meaning of faith, courage and hope.
Gilbraith, the Dragon creates a scenario that forces the boy, Jason, to go on a journey of discovery. His travelling companions are the Queens, Bishops, Knights, Rooks and Pawns of a Chess set who are all searching for their abducted Kings.
They encounter challenges, problems, riddles and conundrums all of which take varying degrees of talents and skills to solve. JASON AND THE DRAGON is a journey into the imagination. A witty, funny, touching musical fantasy-adventure that deals with the very real issues of care, trust, friendship and love.
JASON AND THE DRAGON was originally written as a musical suitable for animation with its fantasy story and many and varied characters.
In 2003, however, the musical premiered at The Showroom, Crown Casino, in a stage adaptation, featuring over 250 children from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, a college in the inner western suburbs of Melbourne.
The production was a unique project for the college. It brought together the talents of a dedicated staff, a large performing student body, parent involvement, corporate sponsorship, past students and the work of various visiting professionals from the industry who all worked to create the world premiere of this musical.
Further to the stage performance, JASON AND THE DRAGON was used throughout the college as an example of the "integration of the arts into the wider school curriculum". Subject areas including Religious Education, Drama and Dance, English, Health and Physical Education, Technology, LOTE, Mathematics, Science all used the production in some way in their own individual teaching areas and curriculum.
Visual Arts, for example, integrated the project into the Year 8 "Myths and Legends" unit of work while Year 10 Visual Communications and Design used the script in the "Information design unit - logo concept", running a competition that produced the Logo for the production used throughout the production process. Images from the "Myths and Legends" Year 8 project were projected onto large screens which accompanied the stage production.
The students also produced a CD recording of the musical, accompanied by a specially orchestrated version of the score for developing musicians.
Gary and Paul would like to commend the over 250 students for their dedication and commitment to the World Premiere of this work and thank the school community, and especially the principal, Mr. Michael Quin for this unique opportunity.
With direction and musical direction by Paul Keelan and the role of the Narrator played by Gary Young, the writers of JASON AND THE DRAGON were 'hands on" in the development of this work.
